Women and Policing Globally
A Landmark Event
In October 2002, the Australasian Council for Women and Policing hosted an historic event, the 2002 Women and Policing conference.
More than 800 police, human rights activists, researchers, policy makers, academics, and law enforcement officers from around the world came together in Canberra to explore how policing can be improved for women.
The central theme of the conference was creating an Australasian link in the global network of women police and how, through that network, women's human rights can be better protected and policed.
Papers and abstracts from the conference are available from the Australian Institute of Criminology website.
The conference was the culmination of more than three years work by the Council and for the first time brought the annual International Association of Women Police to the Southern Hemisphere and for only the second time outside of North America. Co-hosted by the Australian Federal Police the conference opened with an All Nations Parade celebrating the 48 countries represented at the conference.
